چکیده

-Walker Lake, a terminal saline lake in western Nevada, has experienced major fluctuations in its water level due to changes in the regional climate during Quaternary times. As part of a paleoclimatological study of western Nevada, we have investigated organic matter 6 ~3C and C/N values and lipid biomarker contents of sediments deposited at various periods over the past 150 thousand years of lake history. Surficial sediments from two cross-lake transects contain mostly lake-derived organic matter. Diagenetic losses of organic matter are evident in deeper sediments, and the proportion of aquatic and terrigenous organic materials changes in response to variations in preservational factors. Source identification of organic matter is complicated by the probability that Walker Lake has experienced desiccation at various times in its history which impacts the degree of preservation of organic substances.

Evaluating sedimentary geochemical lake-level tracers in Walker Lake, Nevada, over the last 200 years

Walker Lake, a hydrologically closed, saline, alkaline lake located along the western margin of the Great Basin of western United States, has experienced a 77% reduction in volume and commitment drop in lake level as a result of anthropogenic perturbations and climatic fluctuations over the last century. The history of lake-level change in Walker Lake has been recorded instrumentally since 1860...

Stable isotope studies on Mono Lake (California). 1. al80 in lake sediments as proxy for climatic change during the last 150 years

Mono Lake is a hypersaline, alkaline lake in the Mono Basin located #at he eastern base of the Californian Sierra Nevada. Its lake-level history since 1912 has been recorded instrumentally, showing the decline of lake-surface elevations initiated by the 1941 artificial diversion of stream inflow. We have made high-resolution oxygen isotopic measurements on the total carbonate fraction of lake s...

Stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen in the Truckee River-Pyramid Lake surface-water system. 1. Data analysis and extraction of paleoclimatic information

The 6’*0 content of streamflow discharge entering Pyramid Lake is a simple mixture of isotopically enriched Lake Tahoe discharge and isotopically depleted snowmelt. The aI80 value of Pyramid Lake water varies continuously, as isotopically depleted water evaporates from the epilimnion and isotopically depicted water enters the lake as streamflow discharge and on-lake precipitation. In a normal w...

Tectonic Deformation of a Lacustrine Mudstone at Soda Lake Geothermal Field, Western Nevada, USA, from 3D Seismic Interpretation

The transition between the two structural regimes of the Walker Lane and the Basin and Range allows for complex transtensional fault interactions. NWtrending dextral shear in the Walker Lane and WNW extension in the northern Great Basin imparts enhanced extension and pull-apart basins that bring about structural controls for geothermal systems. The Carson Sink is the surface expression of this ...

Introduction Identification of the climate changes is important for understanding the paleoenvironmental characteristics. Sedimentary evidence of the closed basins can be one of the most important methods for identifying the climatic periods and changes in the sedimentary environments. Gavkhouni Playa, as the lowland of the ZayandehRud River catchment area is located in an inter-mountainous...
